At least one body is discovered here every month, having remained undiscovered in an apartment for several weeks. Furthermore, there are hundreds of funerals annually where authorities are unable to locate any relatives of the deceased. “Vom einsamen Sterben” sheds light on a suppressed phenomenon in society at large. Interviews with specialists and stakeholders from nursing, authorities, funeral services, neighborhoods, and telephone counseling form the documentary foundation for a walk-in audio installation. The metallic clinking of a mailbox slot, children’s laughter from the yard, voices from the television, and the rustling of a newspaper being turned over meld with the interviews and music, creating an atmospheric headphone concert that each individual can experience for themselves.
