The work “The Garden of Falling Sands” by Mexican choreographer Yolanda Morales creates a utopian, magical place on stage – a garden bathed in a warming yellow light. A place that is fictitiously set in another cultural space: in the barren, ecologically and politically crisis-ridden desert landscape in northern Mexico. There, in Monterrey, a border town to the USA, the dances of “Cumbia Colombiana” are practiced by a young local scene as a ritual of identity and empowerment. How do new rituals emerge that can create commonalities in our increasingly fragmented societies? After intensive choreographic research on-site, Morales, her team and three dancers, bring these questions to the stage, exploring the permeability of borders and belonging in the face of the inhumane impacts of global capitalism.
