“Space as an Instrument” explores the relationship between space and sound using numerous distributed metronomes. The work deliberately moves away from traditional loudspeaker setups and instead relies on many small, wireless sound sources.
Their arrangement and constant repositioning create a decentralized network, a polyphonic landscape that transforms the space itself into an architectural soundbox. The audience becomes part of an immersive experience.
In the current iteration, Sey Lee is expanding this approach for the first time to include samplers. Using fragments collected by the artist, an even more diverse, organic auditory environment is created.

“Space as an Instrument” is a project.
It’s about space and sound.
A sound is a tone or a noise.
There are many metronomes in the room.

A metronome keeps a steady beat.
The devices are placed in many different spots.
This changes the sound in the room.
You hear it in a new way every time.

There are no large speakers.
Many small devices produce sounds.
They are arranged differently each time.
This creates a network of sound.

The room becomes a sound box.
The audience is right in the middle of it.
You hear something from all sides.
The sound surrounds the people.

Now there is a new idea.
The artist Sey Lee works with samplers.
A sampler stores sounds.
And plays them back.

She collects small pieces of sound.
These are called fragments.
They are recombined.
This creates a new world of sound.

The sound becomes more diverse.
And also more alive.
There are more natural sounds.
The room sounds even fuller.
