How do stereotypes and discrimination impact a developing being? How do those who constantly feel like outsiders in Western society develop? Hidden in the black of skin, space, and time, “In the Black” tells the story of a life shaped by the need to justify, transform and build one’s place as a Black individual. It’s a quest for inner beauty, to rise above and proclaim pride in what’s misunderstood yet anchored in the beauty of Black skin, culture, and heritage.
A transformation occurs on stage: a dance solo that embodies evolution through innocence and rage, to arrive at a sense of pride. Through the collaboration of music, poetic audio description and choreography, the rollercoaster of emotions, shared among members of the Black community, finds its own expression of being Black – within the black box of the theatre, the audience witnesses an empowerment and a moment of screaming louder “In the Black”. Before the performance, at 4:30 PM, there will be a tactile tour with the team.
