In FAKE DIAMONDS, Hamburg based choreographer and dancer René*e returns to the dance floors of her past, to gyms, community halls and ballrooms. She dances with and against herself as a former dancer in the competitive sport of Latin American ballroom dancing. On the theatre stage, she remembers touches between dance partners, stern looks from the judges, step sequences and scoring categories. She thinks back to rhinestone-studded dresses, self-tanning lotions and exotic music, to trophies and defeats. In the sparkling glow of fake diamonds, René*e and her team are now choreographing the old dances anew. With a queerfeminist dance performance, they question sexiste and racist structures in competitive dance, the heteronormative ideal of the romantic couple and binary ideas of winning and losing.
FAKE DIAMONDS – A dance performance about old memories and new questions

The choreographer and dancer René*e returns:
To the places of her past – to gyms, ballrooms and community halls.

She used to be a competitive dancer in Latin American ballroom dancing.

Now she thinks back:
– to dance partners
– to the looks of the judges
– to glittering dresses and self-tanners
– to victories and defeats
– to exotic music and rigid rules

On stage, she dances the old dances anew – with a new perspective.
Together with her team, she puts on a queer-feminist performance.

She asks:
– What is fair in dance sport?
– Why are there so many sexist and racist rules?
– Why do dance couples have to be men and women?
– And: What does winning or losing actually mean?

FAKE DIAMONDS is an intimate piece that addresses the audience – and invites reflection and empathy.
