“We’re All Swimming in the Same Water” is a performative sound walk along the Hamburg harbor. The project connects water metaphors with migration and climate discourse in both historical and contemporary contexts. Rather than taking a retrospective look at colonial legacies, it focuses on current structures of movement and exclusion. Water serves as both an analytical and poetic figure—as a vessel of memory and a tangible force. The project examines how terms such as “flood” or “wave” shape perceptions by creating a sense of powerlessness, dehumanizing, and obscuring responsibilities. Against this backdrop, migration and climate change are increasingly framed as security risks, shifting the focus toward regulation and perpetuating colonial logics.
“Wir schwimmen alle im selben Wasser”

This is a special walk through the Port of Hamburg.
You’ll hear sounds and noises along the way.
It’s called a sound walk.

The project uses water as an example.
It’s about migration and climate.
Migration means people moving to another country.
The project looks at what’s happening today.

In the past, there were colonies.
Colonies are countries under the control of other countries.
Water has many meanings.
It can be calm or powerful.

It stands for memories and change.
Words like “flood” or “wave” are often used.
They often sound dangerous.
This makes people afraid.

Sometimes this makes people seem less important.
Their stories are overlooked.
Many politicians talk about dangers.
They want to make more rules.

The project says:
All people are equally important.
